This general map of Europe was first published in Gerardus Mercator’s atlas in 1595. Iceland is still in the shape it had acquired the map of Guðbrandur Þorláksson, even if a better depiction of Iceland would appear in the same publication.
South of Iceland is the mythical island Frisland, curtesy of Nicolo Zeno, as well as some other non-existing islands.
