Islandia

YEAR 1598

This map appears to use Ortelius’ Islandia as its model. It is much smaller but still well done and with many details. It was published by Barent Langenes and Cornelis Claesz as a part of a miniature map collection containing 169 maps, a project started in 1598. The map, Islandia, was engraved by Petrus Kaerius, one of the most famous engravers of the time. Two monsters can be seen in the sea, both copied from Ortelius’ map. There are about seventy place names and the map is quite detailed considering its size, not least in how Hekla is depicted.
