Martin Waldseemuller (1472/1475–1520) was a German cartographer who is credited for the first map to show the name America. Waldseemuller says in the accompanying writings that he feels it is right to name the continent so, in honor of the achievements of the captain Amerigo Vespucci. It seems that at the time he underestimated the role of Columbus and overestimated that of Vespucchi and he later removed this name from his maps. But it stuck. He is also known for the maps in the 1513 and 1520 Publication of Ptolemy, the highlights of which were another world map, called the Admiral’s map.
